Description
Every syllable in every word has to have a vowel. Some of those vowels will make long sounds, and some of those will make short sounds. It is critical for students to understand which spelling patterns signal a long vowel sound and which signal a short vowel sound. Not only do we want kids to recognize the patterns when they are reading, but we also want them to use the patterns when they are spelling. Having a strong background in long vowel spelling patterns is one of the most useful skills you can teach your child for better reading and better spelling.
